How to Reset Your Controller Box

Learn how to perform a Wi-Fi reset and a full system reset on your TruLight controller box to fix connectivity issues or restore factory settings.

This module walks you through how to perform a Wi-Fi reset and a full system reset on your TruLight controller box. Whether your box won't stay connected to Wi-Fi, needs a firmware update, or you've locked yourself out with a forgotten password, this tutorial covers both reset options step by step.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the two reset buttons on your TruLight controller
  2. Perform a full system reset to restore factory settings and clear passwords
  3. Perform a Wi-Fi reset to fix connectivity issues

Identify Your Controller Components

2 minutesVideo: 0:00-0:27

Your TruLight system has two main hardware pieces and two reset buttons. Knowing which is which saves you from resetting the wrong thing.

Key Concepts

The Brain (Controller) vs. The Power Unit

Your TruLight system is made up of two components: the controller (also called the "brain") and the power unit. The controller is the piece that connects to Wi-Fi, runs your light patterns, and stores your settings. The power unit supplies electricity to the LED track. When troubleshooting, you'll almost always be working with the controller.

Two Reset Buttons

At the very top of the controller, you'll find two small holes. One resets just the Wi-Fi connection. The other resets the entire system, including your password and all settings. You'll need a toothpick, pin, or SIM-eject tool to press them.

Action Step

Go find your TruLight controller box and locate the two reset holes on top. Identify which one is the Wi-Fi reset and which is the full system reset before you ever need to use them.

Perform a Full System Reset

2 minutesVideo: 0:27-0:55

A full system reset clears everything: your password, Wi-Fi settings, and any custom configuration. Use this when you're locked out or the box is unresponsive.

Key Concepts

When to Use a Full System Reset

Use the full system reset when your controller won't respond at all, you forgot your device password, you accidentally set a password you don't know, or the box won't stay connected to Wi-Fi long enough to update firmware. This wipes everything and returns the controller to factory defaults.

How to Reset

Insert a toothpick or pin into the system reset hole (not the Wi-Fi-only hole). Press and hold for 10 seconds. You'll feel a small click when the button engages. Keep holding until the lights blink. Once they blink, the reset is complete. The lights will pop back on, and you can reconnect to the controller as if it were brand new.

Action Step

If your controller is currently working fine, there is no need to reset it right now. Instead, take a photo of the top of your controller and label the two reset holes so you have a quick reference when you actually need it.

3

Perform a Wi-Fi Reset

1 minuteVideo: 0:55-1:09

A Wi-Fi reset is lighter than a full system reset. It refreshes the controller's wireless connection without wiping your password or settings.

Key Concepts

When to Use a Wi-Fi Reset

Use the Wi-Fi reset when your controller is sluggish connecting to your network, drops off Wi-Fi frequently, or won't stay connected long enough to download a firmware update. This is the first thing to try before doing a full system reset.

How to Reset Wi-Fi

Insert a toothpick or pin into the Wi-Fi reset hole. Press and hold for 5 to 10 seconds until the lights cycle through a pattern. Once the lights cycle, release the button. Your controller should now connect to Wi-Fi significantly better. Your password and settings remain untouched.

Action Step

If you've been experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity issues with your controller, try the Wi-Fi reset now. If your system is working fine, bookmark this tutorial so you can find it quickly when you need it.

Summary

What You Learned:

  • Your TruLight controller has two reset buttons: one for Wi-Fi only and one for a full system reset
  • A full system reset (10-second hold) clears everything including passwords and is used when the box is unresponsive or locked out
  • A Wi-Fi reset (5-10 second hold) refreshes connectivity without wiping settings and should always be tried first

Next Steps:

After resetting your controller, you may need to reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network. Check the "Reconnecting Your TruLight Box to Wi-Fi" tutorial for a walkthrough.
